Well have made a little progress.
Remember I was at the point where I could not get pass the light blue
Windows flag window.
Booting off the W98 boot floppy created a directory on C: called DAC960 and
copied the four files Pete gave me dac960nt.inf, dac960nt.mpd, install.txt
and scsipupd.exe into it. Ran scsipupd.exe and was told that it could not be
done in DOS mode. It has to be done from within Windows. A catch 22
situation, cannot start W98.
On starting up 500/390 I get on its boot screen
IBM Raid Controller Driver Version 1.05 and
IBM Raid ASPI Manager (DOS) Version 103i
Thes do not come up starting W98 on 500 with the F5 option
No idea how this happens on 500/390 I just do not remember. Did not keep log
notes back in those days.
Anyrate copied IBMRAID.sys, RDASPII.sys, RDCROM.sys, config.sys and
autoexec.bat off 500/390 onto 500.
On restart got through the light blue flag scene and installation went on
its way ie user, company, licience number etc etc to restart and more
installation hardware, plug'n'play, date and time etc etc then it said it
could not find and wanted dhcpsvc.dll so gave it a copy off 390/500. Well
this went on and on and after feeding it 15 odd missiing files I saw it was
trying to get them from C:\Windows|System\Precopy. The Plextor drive off an
AHA1540 was gone where the WW98SE cd was. It could no longer see the
Plextor.
Deciding I could do a W98 repair skipped all that and got to the desktop
okay with an error message vnetbios.vxd was missing. Gave it a copy off
500/390, rebooted , at get to the desktop okay.
At last have W98SE working on Server500 but no cdrom drive.
Device manager shows AHA1540 not working. Tried to fix it but no cdrom to
feed it the EZI-SCSI cd.
One strange think, on all the restarts the HDD's take a terrible pounding
for a few seconds. I read something about this in my travels that it was a
problem on Server500.
During my experiments to get the cdrom working I cancelled this line in
config.sys
REM DEVICE=C:\RDCROM.sys
reasoning it was nothing to do with the Plextor. The terrible pounding of
the HDD's on start up has gone.
By the way on a F5 start up I get those two lines
IBM Raid Controller Driver Version 1.05 and
IBM Raid ASPI Manager (DOS) Version 103i
so the Cheetah seems to happily installed. William I do not know how.
Tried to copy off my EZ-SCSI 4.0 cd Disk 1 Disk 2 Disk 3 and Disk 4. Could
not copy 1 and 3 got errors.
Cleaned CD and tried it on several other computers with the same result.
Made a copy of the cd on Nero 6 with verification, all okay but disk 1 and
disk 3 cannot still be made.
Will search web tonight to try and get AHA1540 drivers on a floppy to feed
to the crook devics manager error line.
Years ago I have been down this road before to install a scsi cdrom but
cannot remember what to do ie lines in config.sys or autoexec.bat and some
files to put in C:\. Seem to recall something about a series of files with
mcam18xx.sy_ which I have on a floppy called ADAPTEC EZ-SCSI v4.00b W95 or
NT4. It has files with 15xx in its name and also an adf file. Feeding this
floppy to the AHA1540 device error was no good.
Did not run the setup.exe file on the floppy as it is W95.
Basil
