Thank you all for your tips and suggestions. AFAIR, many of the pots are
directly soldered and partly encased on the board, it will not be possible
to remove or replace them.
Unless the pots are truly completely sealed (expensive), there should be some small gap somewhere that you can weasel in some cleaner.
Where you might run into problems down
the road is the fact that the alcohol also removes lubricant from the
pot.
Jim, do you mean the lubricant on the contact surface?
Yes. There are various products that can replace the lubricant. I have heard good things about a compound created by the same folks who make DeOxit, but I can't remember the name. DeOxit is a very good cleaner as well, but has no lubricating properties.
Cleaning with alcohol and complete relube with the Teflon
grease made them smooth as silk. Wish I could find the stuff....
I must see where to find this magic stuff, I hardly remember when I last saw
an electronic parts shop here around, they have all faded away.
This was a clear grease, strongly resembling silicon grease/dielectric compound. I have seen other Teflon greases since then, but they all seem to have come color to them, which makes me wonder about other additives with may (or may not) harm the carbon resistive surfaces inside the pot.
