AIX 3.2.55 on 7009-C19/GT3i/6091-19i

Installed AIX 3.2.5 from a tape okay but it came up as a command line
installation not a gui installation.
Also smit was missing things like tcpip, list what is on a tape etc.
The GT3i shows up okay on the VPD list.
Tried #xinit and #configassist, but not there.
Using smit to install CDE, Xwindows, enter /dev/rmt0 and at the software to
install line, F4. The top light of the 8mm Exabyte is out, the middle light
flashes about 20 times and the bottom light remains as solid green. The
overlay on the smit screen says processing data and after 30 mins have to
hit Ctrl+C/F10 to get back to the command prompt. Cannot get a list of more
software to install.
Rebooted, put install tape back in and under smit said install all. It got
up to installing 138 0f 204 sets and then got tape I/O error for the
remaining 66 sets.
Have 3 hard drives totalling 12gb and all on the VPD list.
As a lot of Russian, Chinese and German stuff got installed so rebooted in
service mode and reinstalled AIX3.2.55 off the tape again which ended up as
the command line installation. Made a new smit mksysb okay.
On the second install I really checked the preservation and overwrite
methods and could not find an option to install CDE.

Couple of questions please

Should AIX 3.2.55 install automatically to a gui install if ther is a video
card and monitor available ?

With the all install error above and the apparent lockup of trying to get a
list of what is on the tape to install, could this mean the tape is corrupt
at the end ?
