The IBM 2488 Pen-Based Computer Model 800 is a tablet size, 486 microprocessor pen-based portable computer featuring a full-size LCD screen with a viewable area of 5.5 x 7.5 inches (140 mm x 191 mm). Perfect for mobile personnel whose jobs require them to be constantly on the move, this versatile unit allows them to record and transmit data as they go. With the advanced and natural pen interface, workers can complete application-specific forms and write directly on the full-size 9.5-inch diagonal screen -- just as they would on paper -- while moving from room to room, indoors to outdoors, or vehicle to warehouse.
Equipped with a 50 MHz DX/2 fully IBM compatible microprocessor, the IBM 2488 Pen-Based Computer Model 800 is engineered for high performance. For ease of user training and interface, the IBM 2488 Model 800 supports PenRight! for DOS or Windows, Windows for Pen Computing, and Windows for Workgroups. It is ideal for improving efficiency and productivity in health care, field data collection, transportation and factory floor applications. In addition, its wireless connectivity capabilities offer real time information at the user's fingertips.
Designed to withstand the rough handling typical in field and industrial environments, the IBM 2488 Model 800 is specially sealed to resist water, dust and humidity; and it will survive a 4-foot drop onto concrete.
The Model 800 is shipped with the following standard features: DX2-50 Processor,9.5-inch diagonal electromagnetic VGA LCD with transflective backlight, 8MB RAM, 256KB flash ROM, 2700mAh battery pack with built-in fast charging, wand interface, MS-DOS 6.22, shoulder strap, tether, backup battery. Stylus type and hard drive options must be selected. See the Description section for complete list of optional features, including stylus type and hard drives.
Intended Customers: The IBM 2488 Pen-Based Computer is designed to meet the needs of customers who require mobile, roaming access to computing facilities within a building or campus area. End users may include warehouse, hospital, and retail personnel. In the past, this access was limited to those places that could be directly wired to host computers.
Key Prerequisites: If the 2.4 GHz radio option is selected, a site survey and installation planning classes are highly recommended and are available from IBM Availability Services at 800-999-0052.
While not prerequisites, the following may be helpful: Software development kits are available which aid in the development of pen-based applications for the 2488 running PenRight! from Telxon at 800-800-8008. Third-party integrators are available to provide application software, installation and services support.

Hardware Requirements
* For wireless communications, an integrated 2.4GHz Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum radio is available.
This allows the 2488 to communicate within an RF cell created by another 2.4GHz radio product such as:
o Access Point -- 2480-E00, 2480-RS0, 2480-TR0
* AC adapter -- the batteries need to be initially conditioned for 16 hours. This operation will also condition the internal bridge battery.
* Memory -- depends on the application. The 2488 Model 800 comes standard with 256K bytes of flash ROM and 8MB RAM. To support an operating environment like DOS or Windows, a minimum of 8MB of RAM and a 40MB hard drive are recommended. Improved performance may be realized by installing 16MB of RAM and larger hard drives depending on the applications. When running without a radio, it is recommended to configure the unit with 16MB of RAM and a hard drive for improved storage capacity. More RAM can be used if the application requires it, up to 32MB.
* Serial cable is required when loading software into the unit's 256K flash ROM which plugs into the 8-pin mini DIN serial port. Use Flash plug from SDK developers kit.
* Keyboard -- A PS/2-type keyboard can attach to the unit.
* Parallel/Floppy disk port -- The 2488 Model 800 comes with a 50 pin combination parallel/floppy disk port that enables an external floppy disk drive.
* Storage -- many storage options exist for the 2488 Model 800, however type III rotating disk drive cards are not recommended for rugged environments.
* Bar code scanning is supported with an external pencil wand or laser scanner connected via the RJ41 port.
Software Requirements
* DOS 6.22 -- Operating System
The operating system shipped and installed in the IBM Pen-Based Computer Model 800 is MS-DOS 6.22, and the pen extension is PenRight run time environment. The run time module is required when running PenRight applications developed with the PenRight SDK. The 2388 Model 800 can support both DOS and Windows Pen applications. Pen applications developed in open platform environments, C + +, are supported. Both MS-DOS and the pen writing extension are pre-loaded into flash read only memory allowing for easy upgrades when desired. For Windows support, Windows 3.1 or 3.11 is required and will run on the 2488 Model 800. The pen extension required is Windows for Pen Computing. These extension can be pre-loaded on an optional internal hard drive.
Several application software development kit options can be obtained directly from the Telxon Corporation by calling 800-800-8008.
Compatibility
Connectors:
* RJ41 port enables the use of an external scanner or internal 28.8k modem.
* 8-pin mini-DIN serial port allows connection to any standard serial device using one of several special adapter cables. Also enables the 256K flash to be programmed.
* PS/2 style keyboard port allows connection for a PS/2 style keyboard
For charging, the unit can connect to either an AC or cigarette lighter power adapter.
The 2488 Model 800's real time communication capabilities can be expanded with an optional internal radio:
* A 2.4 GHz Spread-Spectrum Direct Sequence radio provides secure, interference-free communication in a localized network (that is, a factory complex, hospital, or truck depot). It is compatible with all the AS/400 wireless products and can be easily integrated into such networks as Ethernet, Token Ring or RS485 by using the appropriate Access Points.
Additional I/O is available via the Pen-Based Computer's industry standard Type II/III PCMCIA connector which accepts credit card size devices such as static RAM and network interface cards. Modem communication is available by connecting an optional PCMCIA data/fax modem card. Compatibility testing- including software- should be conducted on any PCMCIA devices not specifically recommended by IBM before being used with the 2488 Model 800.
PCMCIA type II SRAM cards can be used with the 2488 Model 800 for transferring applications or data between units or other computers. The 2488 Model 800 is capable of supporting a Type III rotating disk drive card into the PCMCIA socket, however it is not recommended for rugged environments.
Limitations: Compatibility testing -- including software -- should be conducted on any PCMCIA devices not specifically recommended by IBM before being used with the IBM Pen-Based Computer 2488 Model 800.
Planning Information
Customer Responsibilities
Prior to the purchase of any of any RF wireless products, it is highly recommended that a professional site survey be conducted to determine appropriate radio frequency coverage and assure an effective network configuration. The results of the site survey will determine the recommended equipment to be ordered and its placement in the customer environment. The customer is responsible for insuring that an appropriate site survey is conducted by an authorized network designer and installer. IBM Availability Services is an IBM authorized site surveyor. There are many IBM field personnel who are trained to perform site surveys.
The AS/400 Wireless Network Installation Planning Guide (G571-0303) is available to assist customers in preparing for a wireless LAN installation. The AS/400 Wireless Site Survey Guide (G571-0339) is available to assist IBM personnel in preparing to perform a wireless LAN site survey and future installation.
To find out more about site surveys and installation, contact your local IBM Availability Services representative or call the IBM Availability Services Support Line at 800-999-0052.
Customer Solution Centers (CSCs): Customer Solution Centers (CSCs) can provide product module installation, testing and pre-loading of customer software for the AS/400 family of products. AS/400 Wireless LAN environments, consisting of AS/400 Access Points, data collection devices, and other equipment, can be configured by any of the seven CSCs in the United States and shipped to multiple locations world-wide for simultaneous installation.
Software development kits are available which aid in the development of pen-based applications for PBCs running PenRight!. To order and obtain support for these programs, call Telxon at 800-800-8008.
