Re: raid box died how restore?

I have an external 2 TB USB/Firewire enclosure that the device is no

Raid 0 configuration. Vendor says they will replace it but the drives
will be wiped and they will not restore the data. I have extracted
the hard drives individually into a computer and they all power up and
drive tests return all drives are OK, so must be an issue with the
built in controller. How can I access the data on these four hard
drives to retrieve them before sending the device back? Can I use an
IDE Raid card to connect all these hard drives to at Raid 0 and they
will show up as 1 2TB partition like they did in the external
enclosure? If I can, any suggestions on which card to go after?

Most reputable "high end" vendors will send you a replacement box and give you a reasonable period of time (30 days, typically) to send back the bad box. Naturally, they require a credit card number or other means of billing you if you decide not to send back the bad box. I'd recommend that you try that approach first, if they agree, you're in business. If they won't "play ball", buy another box of the same model from a seller with a liberal return policy, use that box to backup your data, then return that box to the seller, then do the return of the original box to your vendor. This second approach is less desirable than the first, because you're penalizing the seller with the liberal return policy, but it keeps you from getting screwed by the vendor. RAID implementations are usually proprietary -- vendor A's implementation of RAID 0/1/5/10 will be different from vendor B's implementation, so trying to stick your drives on another RAID controller is not likely to work.
