Re: need backup suggestions for AIX 1.3 on Model 77 and 95's

Sounds good to me Alvin, I did not even think about NFS. Another case
of not seeing the forest for the trees I suppose. The RS 6000 has AIX
4.3 and a nice little DDS tape unit with several tapes.

The purpose of running AIX 1.3 on the PS/2s when I have an RS 6000 may
not be clear but it's mostly a facination that I have with the
older microchannel boxes instead of a real need. :o)

Thanks for the suggestion.

I recently installed AIX 1.3 on a PS/2 Model 77 and plan a later
installation on a Model 95. After feeding in dozens of floppies for
the installation and even after problems with booting from a 2 gig
hard drive I do like the overall results. The main problem is that a
backup device of some sort is needed. Who wants to use floppies if
there is another device that will do the job?

What practical options were supported by AIX 1.3 on the PS/2? The
cdrom drives that I currently have are read-only. Could a read/write
cdrom drive be used? It would really be nice to use a SCSI tape
device of some sort like one of the DDS models but I don't know
whether or not they work under AIX on a PS/2. I also run OS/2 ver 2.1
and ver 4 on other some other PS/2's and backup is needed there also.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you have a more modern computer (read: no issues with finding spare parts
when something breaks) running linux, AIX, Solaris, ... and a LAN, I would
be tempted to say: run NFS, cpio, dd, tar, cp, rsync are some of the
commands that you may want to run. Just be carefull with the exported
partition size: anything over 2GB may bring your respectable 32-bit O/S
down.
