I picked up a new battery and replaced it, but that did not correct my

This is not particularly surprising, as the old battery would hold your
CMOS configuration values until the voltage is very low (somewhere below
1 volt, the exact value varies -- I've seen some designs where 0.5 volts
was sufficient to "hold" the values). During the changeover, you lost
your CMOS settings, and your hardware problem (likely to be a motherboard
problem) is keeping you from coming up far enough to set up CMOS again.
Where are you located, Dave? I'm in Vestal, NY, if the machine is
located in my area I could stop by and take a look at it, which would
cost you nothing (other than making arrangements to get me into the
machine room, if needed). Since the machine will likely need parts that
I don't have on hand, you should be scanning eBay looking for a 8640-Mxx
(MY0, MYR, MYT, MZ0, MZ1, MZ2, MZV, MD0, MD2, MDV, or MDS) that is
operational, and try to convince management that an eBay purchase will
probably be the least expensive option to get the server running again.
You might also consider purchasing a PC Server 500-390, which would give
you an upgrade from your current system while still maintaining a
reasonable level of compatibility. However, if you require a "drop-in"
replacement, then you'll definitely want the Microchannel PC Server 320
as a replacement machine. Note that the MYx models are 90MHz, MZx is
100MHz and MDx are 133MHz.
Thanks for the offer, Rick, but I am in the DC metro area. I checked with
IBM and they referred me to a local authorized service facility. I called
them and they indicated they could have someone on site to evaluate the
problem for $120/hr. I may take them up on this to see what I am dealing
with.
In addition to this option I am also considering Hercules as another way
to replace the P/370. This would use current hardware and is the way I
will likely go if the 8640-MY0 is not worth repairing. I will need to
spend some time verifying this is a workable option for the P/370
application we are running. I did a quick check a few years ago and found
that I could boot my P/370 images with the version that was available at
that time, so I suspect the current releases will do so as well.
Thanks be to God that my backup server, a 9595-0LF, is working while I am
dealing with the problems with this server.
