After about 2 1/2 years of trials and denials, I am successfully
running the above. It has been a monumental struggle for an old dude
like me......and a supreme test of Rick Ekblaw's patience!

I know have successfully made bootable mksysb tapes of the above
installation, and written them to a couple of spare drives in case I
really screw up something.

I have one last problem. When I bought my 7011-220 from a fellow in
Florida, he included all the QIC525 tapes for the installation and I
managed to bugger the install tape......the rest of the tapes are
fine. But.............

I cannot seem to install my QIC525tapedrive/CDROM combo on the -250.
I have a 7208-001 connected as #6, and it runs flawlessly. I have
tried connecting the combo as standalone or in series with the 7208,
and either combination prevents booting the hard drive (address 0,0)

This same combo operates perfectly on my N40 running 3.2.5.....but the
instant I plug it in to my 250, the hard drive is not seen. I can
connect the combo, and boot a standalone diagnostic CD, but when I do,
the hard drive is not seen.

Anyone have any suggestions? I am willing to try anything.........
(well, almost anything!)

CT the semi-Triumphant thanks to Rick et al who have helped me with
this installation............

What results do you get if you enter the following before connecting the
tape drive and after connecting it? lsdev -C -s scsi
If there is an address conflict with the SCSI devices this will show you
that. The only other thing is to see if this drive is supported on your
computer without needing any firmware upgrades. I know that the 128
port serial connector we got with our 370 needed a bunch of floppies to
be loaded before it would work with 3.2.5. The extended version of
3.2.5. did not need the drivers to be loaded so you might also want to
try a later version of AIX to see if the problem persists.

Good morning Michael......

That command will only work if I have the 525tape/CDROM combo shut off
(although it is still on the cable)

With the combo turned on and a diagnostic disk in the CDROM, I can
boot the CD and test either the tape drive or the CDROM and they both
check out fine. However, when booted to the CD, the hard drive is no
longer accessible.

The crux of the problem is that the combo and the hard drive cannot
exist on the SCSI bus at the same time.....only one or the other.

I suspect this problem is germane to the 220/250 series of machines.
I am going to try a 370 and a 320h to see if my theory is correct.
