Probably a CD-ROM drive. If you're thinking about running a reasonably recent version of AIX (4.3.3 or 5.1), you might want to consider installing a CD-RW/DVD-ROM unit, or even a DVD writer. If you decide to stick with a CD-ROM, and the current unit is broken, I've got some 32X and 40X 68-pin Plextor CD-ROMs with RS/6000 firmware in them (they came out of some 7025-F50s).
You read my mind. Would a 15K RPM ~30GB SCA drive be OK to use with an
appropriate adapter fitted? Or is that too big? If it is, how big of a
drive should I use?
If you plan to run AIX 4 and up, a 36GB SCA drive with adapter will be fine. Since AIX 4.1.5 is the minimum "supported release", this should not be a problem unless you plan to try to hack together an AIX 3.2.5 release (not recommended). If you decide that you'd like to add a *lot* of DASD to your 7012-397, you might want to keep that SSA adapter and hook a 7133-10/20/500/600 to it (see Announcement Letter 198-008).
