First question: I think the 205w PSU was for systems with the battery
backup unit which consumed one of the drive bays. I've seen people
advertise the trays for sale that hold the battery for this option,
but nothing on the battery itself. I'm assuming the batteries died a
long time ago, and were likely proprietary. Next topic.
Correct. The 205W PSU provided the battery backup supply power, the 197W PSU did not.
One of the things I'm curious about is rack vs bench configuration and
what the model code is telling us. Were they all shipped as rack
mount, and then some of them included the kit for conversion back and
forth between EIA rack and bench / desktop mount?
All were intended as rack mount, bench mount was also available. You made your mount choice via Feature Codes (how else, this being IBM of the 1990s?).
If you remember something on this please let me know.
I can't trust my memory too much anymore, so I went to a reliable source -- SK2T-8287-48, Version 3.1 of the IBM Universal Sales Manual on CD-ROM. If you want the M7546$01.BOO BookManager READ file from the CD-ROM (240KB, the IBM Softcopy Reader program handles it with no problems), just send an e-mail to my Juno account (last name at Juno.com).
