Re: Setting Optra R+ ethernet INA address

Hi!
I'd like to set up my Optra so I can print over
the net. How do I set the ethernet INA's IP
address?
Is there a control panel on the printer? If there is, you might find a
menu that lets you configure the onboard NIC. I can use the printer's
control panel to configure my Xerox Phaser 4400n or LaserJet 4050n.
I noticed that you'd said something about configuring the TR INA in
your Token Male page:
http://www.walshcomptech.com/ohlandl/NIC/Token_Male.html
so you have done it at some point. Maybe that will jog your memory as
to "how".
(By the way, the information that goes into the "Network Adapter
Address" field is not an IP address. Rather, this provides a means by
which to override the hardware (MAC) address of the adapter. You can
and should leave it blank if you have no special reason to do this.
Most people don't have a reason to put anything here.)
Now, the following is not really for an Optra R+ printer, but you
might get useful information out of it anyway:
If there isn't a control panel on the printer, or if the control panel
doesn't seem to be aware of the NIC's presence (in which case you
should check the NIC to be sure it is good and properly seated in the
printer!) then you will have to do things the hard way with ARP/RARP
or BOOTP. (My LaserWriter 12/640 has to be configured for an IP
address with a method called "gleaning" using the PING command, RARP/
BOOTP methods or using the LaserWriter configuration utility GUI
application.)
I'll bet you can guess what I ended up doing since I couldn't make
gleaning work and don't have a RARP/BOOTP server handy. That's
right...I searched and searched for a version of the LaserWriter
config utility and ran it from an older Mac when I finally found it.
That worked out well with a minimal amount of diddling around.
Of course, the utility itself was nearly made of unobtainium when I
went looking for it.
