Re: Somewhat OT: What's this doing on a TR card...?

Hi,

So just what is the **Ethernet** transceiver doing on there? (There's no
mention of this adapter supporting both types of network in any Madge
literature.)

The transceiver provides just the physical layer, and the physical layer
of 100Mbps Token Ring is the same as for 100BaseTX Ethernet (and for FDDI
over copper cables...). I must have an IBM TR PCI card somewhere that does
exactly the same, just with a transceiver from LevelOne (now owned by
Intel).

However, the MAC layer of 100Mbps Token Ring (frame format, MAC frames) is
just the same as for lower TR speeds, so no chance of making such a card
talk to Ethernet. By the way, 100Mbps TR is only defined as Dedicated
Token Ring (full-duplex), which is only available on Token Ring switches,
so no chance of getting 100Mbps TR on an 8228...

Best regards

Alfred
