Hi!
You've discovered one of the "dirty little secrets" regarding 100 Mb
Token-Ring -- while IBM was pressured to release a 100/16/4 PCI
adapter, it did not produce any "intrastructure" products that support
the 100 Mbps speed.
The primary reason behind trying this was the fact that the 8228 is a "dumb
MAU". I don't need 100Mbit TR for anything. The adapters are useful for 16
and 4 megabit TR, so that's what I'll use them for. I needed some PCI TR
cards anyway...and the price was certainly right!
I think there's another dirty secret at work here...that perhaps 100Mbit
Token Ring may not really be Token Ring at all. I say that not because I
have studied the spec in depth, but rather because there is a 10/100
Ethernet PHY on these cards! That makes me think these are dual mode
cards...capable of operating on a true TR network or re-using old TR cabling
with new adapters and a new switch to hit 100Mbit/sec speed.
I am going to think about forcing on the adapters to 100 megabit and seeing
what it does with an Ethernet port.
William
