Hi!
I managed to get by this
using the Reference Diskette to reset the Date/Time but I suspect the
internal battery may be dying/dead.
The clock/CMOS battery appears to recharge itself, so leaving the machine
plugged in for 24 (or more) hours and turned off might bring it back. I have
a couple of L40SX, and some of them came in with 161/163 errors.
Plugging them in for a few days fixed the problem and none have had it
again. I try to plug the "other ones" (beside my main working unit) in every
couple of months.
Is there a fix for this? Are these machines user fixable?
(Note that this only concerns the "standby" battery and the clock/CMOS
battery...not the main battery.)
If the battery will take a charge, just plug the computer in and let it go.
If the battery won't come up...then you'll have to finagle some kind of a
replacement. There exist companies that will take existing battery packs,
open them and replace the bad cells with new ones.
If you find that the battery for the clock/CMOS does not come up, repair or
remove it immediately. If left discharged it could leak and badly damage the
system.
As far as fixing the L40 goes, it's not too bad. Almost anything can be
removed.
http://www.walshcomptech.com/ps2/l40hdd.htm shows you how to take one apart.
While the procedure is geared for the hard disk, you will also see the
batteries along the way.
