Re: L40SX with '163' error on boot.

Hi Mark,
I'm getting some of my PS/2 collection with OS/2 software
installed ready to ship to this year's Warpstock event and
one of my L40SX laptops is now giving a '163' on boot.
I managed to get by this using the Reference Diskette to
reset the Date/Time but I suspect the internal battery may
be dying/dead. The laptop battery won't hold a charge.
Is there a fix for this? Are these machines user fixable?
For the clock functions I think it is the "Backup" battery (since that
is Lithium 3V) that plugs into J9 on Louis's diagram (link below). It looks
to be a standard Panasonic "BR-2/3A" like on the Model 30 8086 riser.
Wrapped in foam, I'll have the way to get at it below.
Not to be confused with the "Backup"battery (IBM FRU 65F0225) that sits
in a holder for the main battery (and plugs into J32, towards the top center
of Louis's diagram at http://www.gilanet.com/ohlandl/8543/8543.html#planar).
It's a 3.6V 45mAH Ni-Cad (so the thought is it should charge with the main
battery/AC power). As long as it hasn't developed a charging memory either.
You will remove the keyboard, but don't need to disconnect anything.
That is (gently) removing the three clips (if present) over the top of the
screws on the underside front of the system (just keep the lid closed for
now). Then remove those three screws (the thought is with the LCD up, the
front of the keyboard should be able to come up & pivot out to be close by;
you will do that after the next step).
Then put down the two outside port covers on the back. Two screws on
the left & one on the right (they fasten into the cover tabs coming down
from the case) should be removed. With the keyboard slightly out of the
socket the whole back top cover should be able to swing out (it clips in the
front, which is why the keyboard should be removed).
Look at Louis's diagram to be able to trace where the bateries are.
Well, both are bright yellow too. This is with the thought that you would be
able to solder or replace the battery otherwise. If you still have some
particular aspect that needs questions asked, come right here to the good
ole PS/2 laptop revival happening on CSIPH right now.
