PrepDisk - to Prepare and Configure Disks
(including Mode Select)
You can get PrepDisk from the NTGSC BBS (803-939-7504) or click here to download PrepDisk (see readme description).
See also the Tools page for other Mode Page tools.
If you see error messages, such as "incomplete", when using option D, see: PrepDisk mdselect errors.
This archive is an image of the flex, use the included copydisk utility to create the flex. When it boots you will have the following options:
* PREPDISK: Preparing your hard disk for NT
* Enter one of the following letters and press Enter.
* If you have further questions call 1-800-GOWINNT.
*
* D - set Disk mode pages via MDSELECT for various adapters (e.g.:
* DEC dsp3210/dsp3107 before Sep94, Seagates from external sources.)
* DO NOT use this with drives that are part of an external
* disk array. This tool runs with NCR, BusLogic, Adaptec
* or Mylex SCSI cards. MDSELECT only works for 1 Mylex channel.
*
* M - set disk mode pages over the Mylex DAC960 adapter
* This disables SMART on new drives and sets the retry counts.
*
* C - to clean the partition information on drive C,
* so that it is ready to install Windows NT.
* Example: If you have an NCR 53C710 SCSI adapter and
* you are converting a disk from UNIX format to NT.
*
* S - to rewrite the NT Boot Sector if it was corrupted.
*
* B - to invoke the BusLogic SCSI BIOS menu, which includes
* a low-level SCSI format function. ONLY for BusLogic adapters.
PrepDisk Errors
For Option D, which runs the MDSELECT tool for disks, there are several things to check:
* If there is no error message the operation completed successfully.
* If the error message said "INCOMPLETE" for a given drive, check the error log file on the floppy, named "mdselect.rpt".
* If the error occurred in changing the capacity, it may have already had the capacity changed.
* You can run the program as "a:mdselect" without the /a option to see more verbose messages, and require operator action for each drive.
