This is on a PC300GL (6591-60U). Its got two IDE drives, the first
having 7546MB; the second having about 6000MB. In DOS, I partitioned
the drives into 15 logical drives. I set up DOS and Windows for
Workgroups in drives C: - F:.
Hi Dan, why did You use DOS for partitioning and not NT?
I installed DOS first and I'm very familiar with DOS Fdisk. But I
might use NT on the next round.
What version? What filesystem? What exact partitions layout?
PC-DOS 7/2000; FAT16. On the first disk (DHEA), I started with a small
primary DOS partition and the rest was an extended partition. Within
the extended partition were 7 logical drives (D-J). The second disk
(WD) is entirely an extended partition with 7 logical drives (K-Q).
If a to old DOS then You might only be able to set up a FAT16 system!
But for a NT operating system the filesystem should be set up as NTFS!
FAT16 is too old, FAT32 may work but NTFS is optimal.
And 15 logical drives on such small as 6 GB drives are nonsens.
These could have better been directories.
There are two advantages to using drives instead of directories.
First, FAT wastes a lot of space with its minimum fiile size. A 2 line
text file can take up a lot of space in a 4GB drive. It takes up less
space in a 700MB drive. (I don't remember the exact numbers). Second,
using a directory structure can quickly lead to exceeding the DOS path
limit. As you see, I'm oriented towards using DOS with all the drives.
I then installed Windows NT 4.0 Workstation. It did fine on the first
round. It then rebooted, resumed set up, announced "checking
hardware" and immediately,
Why didn't You use NT for the formatting itself?
This should support FAT32 and also NTFS.
How did You prepare the *booting device* (maximum of 4 primary
partitons or 3 primary and 1 extended partition).
ONE of the primary partitions requires the "bootable flag"!
C: is the primary and active partition. It has code (Boot.ini for
example) to go to either DOS or Windows NT.
OS Loader v4.00
Boot record signature AA55 not found (0000 found).
As said later this looks like You tried to boot from a logical drive
WITHOUT using a boot manager!
The signature AA55 is part of a bootable partition and if not found
then the MBR looks like to be defect or be treated as not found.
Can you recommend any routines for looking at the partitions and, if
necessary, modifying their content?
Please check the WIndows NT (TM) documentation about hardware diskThis would have led You to the correct point of failure.
configuration and your hardware refverence manuals for additional
information.
What does this mean and what can I do about it?You need a *primary* partition marked as "bootable" (fdisk)
on Your "first" bootable device (Set up in BIOS - see below).
Depending on Your BIOS You may specify "1. primary IDE" or
"1. secondary IDE" port OR "2. primary" or "2. secondary IDE
port" as BOOTABLE DEVICE (one of 4 ports).
Any HD on these port needs "boot flag" in a primary partition!
You know, I didn't check that! Will do.
This sequence is ahead of the other specification of using a
Floppy or CD as OTHER (following) bootable device.
Horst

Dan
