Hi!

This was the very first hit when I copied and pasted the error message
and googled for "Boot record signature AA55 not found (0000 found)".
Took a total of like about two-and-a-half seconds to find.
Interesting. The 4GB limit is hazy, though, and staying within the
first 2GB is a far safer bet.

And this was included for things like "... a Google search on the text
of whatever error message you get...", and...
"Be precise and informative about your problem." I kind of felt like a
lot of pertinent detail was left out the problem description.
Basically, it read like, "I created like fifteen logical drives on two
IDE hard disks, then I installed Windows NT [somewhere], then it gave
me this error message." Of course, we can deduce most of what he
*probably* did (ie; tried to install NT on either the second partition
of the second hard disk, or maybe it was the fourth logical drive on
the first hard disk... or something, but we shouldn't be having to
guess at this kind of stuff (as much fun and good technical exercise it
may be :-)
1. I don't think this is the group, even if some of the points are in
fact relevant.
Do you mean that this isn't the group to be asking tecnical questions
about booting Windows NT from IDE hard drives in a PCI bus machine, or
do you mean that this isn't the group for a pointer to a guide on how
to ask smart questions. (?)
2. A good start, but far, far too narrowly written to be a good general
purpose guide. I read this and it comes across as a guide to posting
articles in a much more technical and less-freewheeling group.
Well, yeah, sure. When I read it a long time ago, it was thrown in
amongst reading whole bunch of other stuff by and about Eric Raymond.
(Here's how I conjured up the link for this thread: Googled on "asking
smart questions raymond" :-) Surely there's nothing wrong with trying
to ask smart questions.
3. Things are getting a little thin when anything turns to OS bashing.
It's a serious blow to this article's quality and makes it sound
childish.
Well, quality is what it is - wherever it comes from. FWIW, I have
some issues with Eric's... ah, perspective, sometimes. Still, the part
about googling for the specific error message and telling what you came
up with is certainly applicable here.
Yes. Throw out that Microsoft trash and install an open-source
operating system like Linux or BSD.
Actually, this was my initial reaction at a solution (albeit a little
tongue in cheek) to Dan's NT boot problem, but like I said, it took me
like two-and-a-half seconds to find something by playing it straight.
This particular notion (get a better OS - which, it may be noted, you
raised here, I didn't) was not what I intended anyone to get out of my
post, but, as Linus says, he didn't set out to defeat the evil empire,
that will just be an unintended side effect :-)
Just don't. (Every OS does stupid things in its own ways.)
Stupid is what it is.
4. Yes, I know. Nobody asked me. I don't care. :-)
Nobody asked me either... at least not outrightly... er... then again,
maybe...
You have great character, my friend - and wisdom for your years... and
gumption, and many, many more redeeming qualities. You have my
respect.
William (by way of the Macintosh, in case you wondered...)
Hadn't given it a thought, actually ;-)
