Re: PS/2 needs jump-start after battery change

Texas Bill is a bit under the weather from the redeye down there in Farmer City. He means that you should not use "DIR" under "MS-DOS" mode. Once the disk is created, just close the DOS window or command prompt, then you can look at it with Winduhs Exploiter or a file mangler of your choice.

Texas Bill's bleary eyes did manage to focus on the ceiling long enough to correctly state that the refdisk cannot hurt either system, XP or PS/2. If you somehow got the incorrect refdisk, as soon as you boot with it, your system will clearly tell you that it's the wrong floppy, and that you must reboot in order to continue.

Hi!

I do not have this reference disk, how do I download it to put
on my floppy with my XP?

Reference diskettes came 'packaged' from IBM's download site (when it
was still readily available) in a single file that did everything
itself when you ran it. All you need is a blank 1.44MB floppy diskette.
Click the following text to download the file you need immediately.
(Copy and paste it if nothing happens when you click on it.)

http://greyghost.dyndns.org/pccbbs/refdisks/rf7080a.exe

These files are a bit choosy about where they'll run from. For the best
result, SAVE (don't run) the file under your C drive. Don't put it in a
folder, because those with names longer than 8 characters will prevent
the program from running. (Nothing will happen if you double-click it.
You could still run it, but this requires familiarity with the FORCEDOS
command and working from a command prompt in XP.)

The computer that you will be using to make the disk *must* have a
floppy diskette drive.

I am scared it will execute and mess with my XP badly.

There is no reason to be scared. This process is very safe. It does not
install anything or change any system settings. Save the program,
double-click to run it, follow the on-screen directions and let it
work. When it is done, you will be returned to Windows. Take the disk
out of the diskette drive, and put it in your PS/2.

At that point, you could delete the rf7080a.exe file from your computer
entirely.

Whatever you do, don't pop the disk back into any computer running
Windows 95 or newer to "have a look" at it. This will damage certain
portions of the diskette's structure.

If your PS/2 computer has items installed in its expansion slots
(numbered 1, 2, 3 on the back of the computer), you may need to find
the so-called "Adapter Definition Files" for these adapters.
