Hi Basil...

Tim
If the Parallel Port Configuration is set to "bi-directional" or
otherwise
has DMA enabled (requires an Arb Level assignment) that might be causing
the
problem, if the Star isn't implementing the parallel port protocol to
standard. There may be an issue with the cable and/or grounding of the
earth
shield.

Tried 3 different cables. No improvement

Oh well, it was worth a try.

You could try fiddling with the Configuration settings for the
parallel port (e.g. "standard/uni-directional/no DMA") such that you
keep
the printer functionality but remove the arbitration failure?

Booted off ref disk
Main Menu/Set Config/Change Config
The only options I had under Built in Features/Parallel Port was
Parallel_1,
Parallel_2, Parallel_3 or Disable.
Could find no where to set Bi-directional, standard, uni-directional or no
DMA.

Hmm, sorry about that. I couldn't remember exactlly when that functionality
appeared.

FYI: Depending upon your planar's Id. (F??? - see the PC-DOS command
"QCONFIG /D /P" output) the "Built-In Features" section (i.e. serial and
parallel ports etc.) are controlled by the PF???.ADF file's settings.

The qconfig.exe program is great. First time I have heard of it. Thanks
Tim.
My 8570 qconfig.exe is set out below.
Every PS2'er should get this program.
Tim any more hidden gems like this ?

<snip>
Planar : ID F3FF - PS/2 Model 70 16/20 MHz
: POS Data = 9F FF 02 FF FF FF
: SubAddr Data = 55 FF
: SIMM Slot 1 = 2MB 85ns SIMM Slot 2 = 2MB 85ns
: SIMM Slot 3 = No memory

So the "Planar Built-in Features" are described by the PF3FF.ADF file on the
RefDisk. This does indeed not assign an arbitration level (DMA channel) for
any Parallel Port setting. So that's not it, sorry. And I can't think of any
other "goodies" offhand. I guess that I stumped right now
