Re: DSL, Microchannel.

Hi Bob, EZ,
Finally got my 3Com MCA ethernet card and am
now running DSL on my 8595. Man am I happy.
I know the feeling. I got one of my 9576i machines out about a
month ago. I simply connected a cable to the 3COM MCA card,
and turned on the machine. Instantaneous DSL high speed ! Win95
OSR2 and OE5 handled everything, all I did was start clicking.
With a POD83 and 64 meg of ram, it was pretty peppy also.
The DSL modems that are distributed by the local telcos in our
territory have both USB & ethernet connections. We tell the linemen of one
of them (not being sexist, but they are all men for that small company) to
use the ethernet interface (the relevant NIC is easy enough to come by if
not already present) because of USB being iffy in some cases. Probably why
(where we install the modems in that area anyway) the other telco recommends
Windows 98 at a minimum level (I've done as low as WfW 3.11 on my connection
& it could be lower with the right TCP/IP stack).

I just had a thought, and I'm sure that other PS/2'ers can answer
this, 'cause you guys are running enough equipment to keep the
power companies in double shifts and luxurious vacations.
If I connect my:
2 X 9576i ( 2 X POD)
2X 9585 ( 1 with POD )
2X 9595A ( 1 P90, 1 - 150MHz )
1 9577i (POD )
1 Server 500
1 Server 720
1 Server 320 PCI/MCA
1 Server 300
2 IBM PC 365 Dual PPro 200
1 IBM PC750
and all of my Whizzbangs to a 16 port hub, connected to a
DSL modem, and turn them all on at once: Will this seriously
alter the rotation of the EartH, causing wild gyrations resulting
in the EartH spinning wildly out of control and into the Sun ? I
could make money at this by extorting the EartH's inhabitants
into paying me to NOT do this I think.....
For at least a handful of systems (depending, and with the usual
microchannel NIC being 10Mbps) the average DSL connection of 256Kbps should
do fine. Faster rates are possible, at a cost (well, at least all that for
me is taken care of by the company). With some big transfers at the same
time I can bog things down (all five *IBM* systems constantly connected on
my home network are with 100BT connections).
