This *may* relate to "Synchronous Transfer", an optional SCSI ptotocol
enhancement.

I'd say definitely, from my OS/2 Device Driver Kit usage I know for a fact
that early NEC CD-ROM drives don't *do* SCSI Standards fully. Avoid anything
before the NEC 4xx models. If you have an IBM/Toshiba or a Pioneer or an
IBM/ Panasonic/Matshita/Matsushita drive to hand try that. These all
implemented the SCSI standards from very early on.
