I wonder if you need to consider a newer CD-ROM drive...or perhaps a
replacement one.
Swapping in a new drive would be the easiest way to see if the drive itself
works. Maybe you are just having bad luck with a drive that is not quite up
to making the TP700C/3550 SCSI subsystem happy.
My opinion of NEC CD-ROM drives as of late is rather low. I had one 6X
caddy-loader unit in a Lacuna Ultimedia and it was really bogging down the
SCSI chain. I replaced it with a Toshiba 4X drive and that has solved all
problems. On a similar front, I also recently acquired a Procom network CD
server with all NEC drives in it. One was completely dead--it wouldn't even
open the tray. That said, I've been very happy with my NEC DVD burners...
Failing that I'd give everything the once over for termination, parity
enabled and good cabling. Maybe there's something that has slipped by...
