I bought the newer 'G' rate (54Mbps) version (WGA54G) tonight for
a few different reasons. One gripe for a "secure wireless network" is
that the device passes the MAC address of the ethernet adapter on the
computer over the Linksys to the wireless access point. So if you have
a MAC address access list it's not just an entry for the Linksys
itself.
Now I will have to lookup the MAC address (usually "IPCONFIG /ALL"
on the Windows side) for each station I would connect with the adapter
& enter the setting into my DSL modem with built-in wireless. The setup
routine was easy enough from CD (remarkable based on my experiences
with other Linksys wireless devices) but I will go to using the web
interface soon. It picked up on my broadcast (for now) SSID, maybe not
so well if it had to be entered manually.
128-bit WEP comes next, where that is held on the Linksys unit at
least. Got to finally put a username & password on the DSL modem too,
just to get more layers of security. For home I've got a firewall, but
for the hotspots I'll have to put something on the 760XL (running W2K
with a 100Mbps PCMCIA adapter).
