Re: 2 Research Machines Nimbus (386) MCA on eBay UK

Hi Graeme !

 (Did I hear a faint "Unfortunately" ?)
</snip>

You might have Peter.. :)

:-D

You make a good point about things like the ADF's. Some of those adapters must be unique for that machine (esp the BNC network card pictured in the link).

Hmm. the old, long WD/SMC 8003A looks similar.
You only need a boot-ROM to get the remote boot functionality - and a server which holds the OS then to boot from. Not much of voodoo or black magic.

Never seend memory cards like those before either. Notice there's a socket for a PLCC 387SX on the planar, plus three interesting red, yellow and green LED's. On-board diagnostics perhaps?

Power, HD and ... something else. I don't know. PS/2 use to have 2 LEDs in most cases.

Wonder if it's CTRL+INS to get into setup?

Don't think so. The chipset is the CHIPS and usually these were pretty simple. I would think that these machines use the reference diskette as well. They are from the same timeline as the 55SX and back then the CTRL+ALT+INS (plus reference partition) was fairly uncommon even to the IBMs. It came with the Mod. 90 first.

It might be possible that "the trivial functions" like setting serial / parallel interface and such are set by a "bios key" (ESC, function key, whatever) but I truely doubt that.
