Although the MicroChannel Architecture intended for every adapter to have a
unique Id., because IBM reserved swathes of Id.s for their stuff from the
~65535 available, this became a bit of a turkey-shoot. The implementation of
the Id. for setup is pretty straightforward and could be customisable with
jumpers, provided the Id.s assigned are registered with IBM or whoever
manages that address space now. The ATI GUP changes Id., if you jumper it to
disable the on-adapter base VGA functionality, too, for example.
