The cells have probably become shorted from disuse. NiCad batteries like to
do that if they sit discharged. Or, it is entirely possible that the
batteries were "boxed but used".

You can replace the cells in the pack and go again. This might be difficult
to do...I popped open an L40 battery pack here and even though I was trying
to be careful, it was pretty mangled when I got done. There seems to be a
lot of glue inside there holding it together.

Look for a PC Convertible supply...specifically, you want the 110/220 model.
IIRC it is completely compatible to that of the L40 and has more than enough
capacity. Chances are good that you'll find one on eBay. I bought one for my
PC Convertible only to find that the machine itself was totally dead. I
think I later sold it to Martin Adams, a one-time regular here on the NG.

While on the subject--does anyone have a need for PC Convertible memory
cards? I think mine are the 256K variety, but I'll check and see if there is
any interest. I have at least three and maybe four of them. You'd pay
shipping cost only.
