At last someone who's understand the problem...
I found this unplugging and replugging my soundcard quite unnerving
sometimes...especially when experimenting with new OS's. I agree it is
an odd requirement and I suspect that sometimes requirements are mere
extra safe guidelines.
Fact is that after installing XP the system doesn't assign any driver
to the soundcard...but the device is listed (as a generic media device)
and when selected it can be "unplugged" via the Device Manager. Then I
reboot (just as a precaution) and install the dedicated drivers. So far
so good.

For those who wonder why 10 or more OS's. Well, I like to keep things
tidy and snappy...so a partition each for Audio, Graphics, Games, Web,
Generic is a good start, then there is Linus, XP64, Windows98...and one
to test new Software, Demos etc.It may seem compicated but it isn't.
Booting time is greatly reduced and security issues are a breeze...for
example keeping a dedicated Web partition separated from the rest is
the best medicine against possible viruses and trojans...who needs
antiviruses? Just get an image of a newly installed Web dedicated
partition and when things seems to be getting a bit out of control,
just wipe the partition and restore it.
That's practical.
