Not feasible to say definitively unless you say which
Compac exactly, and whether its a desktop or a notebook.
If its a desktop, most likely you can just install it
in the compaq just by physically installing it internally,
making sure the jumpering is set to CS, and plugging
it into the spare connector that goes to the hard drive
it already has.
If that isnt feasible for some reason, another approach
is to get one of those cheap external boxes with a
USB2 and/or firewire connection to the new Compaq.
I need this advise ASAP, not to be pushy, but
I am in between a rock and a hard place here!
Then you will likely find installing it internally is quicker
and you can always fall back to the external case if it
doesnt work for some reason. If it doesnt work initially,
try jumpering the old drive to slave instead of CS.
