Re: Memory

I bet it looks a lot like this:

It does. The second of the above is annotated, in the sense that it is
accompanied by a list of items featured on the motherboard. It specifies
two DIMM and 4 SIMM slots and, by comparison with my motherboard, I can
see now that what I have are SIMMS occupying two of the four rows. If I
am inclined to add more memory, assuming I can find some in a discarded
PC or one of my other PC's, I need to know the speed of the memory to know
that they are the same. There doesn't seem to be any way to know that
without removing it. Anyway, I need the experience, so I'll try to remove
it later. Thanks for the instructions on how to do so.

Here's the "PC Wave" version (same board), with a whole lot of specs,
jumper setings, etc. Good old th99 ("Total Hardware 99")!

Page was unavailable for some reason.

I Googled VXPro and was led to http://www.wimsbios.com/HTML/xpro.html
I went to pcchips by clicking on something at wimsbios but couldn't find
the BIOS upgrade.
I'm lost again. Why are we trying to upgrade the BIOS?

Sorry, I'll try to make a clearer distinction in the future between what
I do want to do and what I might want to do.

I went to www.crucial.com and tried to look up the manufacturer but it
didn't seem to be in the list.
The wimsbios page:
Note that this board is also being sold under the following names:
Sybercom MB537
Ability (model: ???)
Protac MB5370
Eurone/Matsonic (model: ???)
Aristo (model: ???)
Houston Technologies M537
PCWare (Alton)
THESE BOARDS ARE IDENTICAL TO THE PCCHIPS M537 !!

Yes, I noticed that from wimsbios. Unfortunately, none of them are listed
at www.crucial.com.

It's a standard "baby AT" board. Pretty much any "older" AT board will fit.

As revealed by the annotations at
http://www.baber.com/baber/411/pcchips_m537.htm

I looked in PC Hardware in a Nutshell and learned that the VIA VT82c585
chipset is incompatible with USB. That seems to rule out plugging in some
kind of USB board to acquire that capability on this old machine. Are
there other reasons why this chipset is deprecated, apart from being old?

USB Port confusion
[snip]

It's good to know that it really can handle USB with a plug-in board.
At the same site there is more information about memory upgrades: it can
only handle 16 MBit technology. There is a table saying that one is limited
to modules of one of the following 3 types:
(1) 16 MByte and 8 chips
(2) 32 MByte and 16 chips
(3) 64 MByte and 32 chips

That makes some sense: all three have 16 MBit per chip, which must be what
they mean by being limited to 16 MBit technology. They also warn that (3)
is rare, expensive, big and can cause trouble, so basically it is (1) and (2).
