Hi to all
After a LOOONG while, I bit another bullet and this splitter device works great! Unfortunately, it's one of those unknown brand types.
I decided to take a look at the VID of the device. In winxp, go to device manager, HID keyboard device, Details tab. The good one had a VID of 4b4 - Cypress - a well known USB vendor. The bad one was a D3D - Tangtop - never heard of before.
So if you can try out the device, moral of the story - go with a known name brand.
There's a list of usb vendors at: http://www.supelec-rennes.fr/ren/fi/elec/docs/usb/list_of_usb_id.pdf
Happy New Year!

Hello to all If this is the wrong forum, I would appreciate a redirection.
With new laptops sporting USB only ports, I hooked up my PS/2 ergonomic mouse and keypad to a single USB port via one those el cheapo splitters. Costs about US$7.
Every now and then, the mouse and keypad will hang, so I have to unplug and plug the device to reset it. Very troublesome of course. The shop says I should buy ths US$30 version.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks,
could be a prob with usb port. could be a prob with ps2-usb adaptor. may even be a windows issue.
you could get the $30 thing, but there's no guarantee that it'll work and I doubt the shop would refund you. so you could then resel it on ebay if it doesn't help.
you could get an ergonomic usb keyb/mouse
I have foudn that some cheap ps2-usb adaptors don't work at all. Other cheap ones do. The little red ones I have work very well. The slightly larger green ones do not. I get "unrecognised device"
See, in my case, with the cheap ps2-usb adaptors, I never got a situation where it worked and then stopped. I got cases where it wasn't recognised at all.
Most ps2 devices won't work at all with the cheap ps2-usb devices. ps2 typically doesn't recognise usb. (though usb recognises ps2) so cheap usb-ps2 works. though in your case it works then stops. So you must have a special ps2 device that recognises usb.
Those 'beasts' with 2 ps2 ports and one usb port. They are detected by windows with their own chunky driver. "human computer interface". So it's not like plugging in a usb keyb and mouse. I don't recall being able to get to the bios with it. It needed windows drivers.
