Hard drive crashed, can I install a new one?

I have an IBM Netvista (1.6 P4, XP Home SP2) and yesterday my hard drive
crashed.
I started getting "1962: No operating system installed" on startup. I
opened up the case and the hard drive was beeping like crazy.
I loaded a Windows disc it said that no HD was installed.
I tried everything. Replacing the IDE cables, changing jumpers, running a
Boot Disk, but nothing worked.
My question: Would it be possible to go out and buy a new HD and a new XP
OS Disc and install them into the system? (This PC is actually my mom's and
since I'm used to my own home-built system, I want to make sure that such a
thing can be done with a name brand PC).
Thanks.
