Re: AMD offers no motherboard: why?

Please! WTF do motherboards have to do with fab capabilities? Do you
think Intel makes motherboards? (I guess you should know).

Motherboards require chipsets, chipsets require silicon. I am pretty
sure everyone who reads this NG knows that...and if they don't it's not
hard to infer. Perhaps as an exercise in education you should check
out the die size on some chipsets...

An exercise in my education? (what a putz)

Ok, let me change the question... WTF does making processors,
chipsets, or silicon(e) breast implants have to do with making
motherboards?

Intel has older fabs to produce chipsets. Where are AMD's older fabs?

FAB 25? You do know that AMD makes chipsets (this board is 8151/8111
based), right? ...though they'd rather not (and for good reason). You do
know that Athlon64/Opteron aren't tied as tightly to the chipset as is
Intel. How much money does Intel make selling chipsets?

Intel may produce motherboards for their own internal needs, but I'd be
relatively surprised. As you pointed out, playing with FR4 is a bit
different than silicon.

Intel used to have FR4 lines, but sold the business off. Now that you've
danced all around the issue, let me ask again; WTF do motherboards have to
do with fab capabilities?

The answer is that AMD doesn't really need to be in the
motherboard
market...Nvidia does a fine job. If there isn't much profit in the
market, why re-enter?

What?! I didn't know nVidia was in the motherboard biz! Wow, I must
be outta the loop.

Motherboard, chipset, the distinction isn't relevant here. AMD does not
enter the chipset market for the reasons I stated (served by existing
companies, requires more fab space and requires more design resources).

Gee, you even admitted (above) that there is a difference between Si and
FR4. Let me ask again...

AMD entering the motherboard business, using someone else's chipsets
would just be a spectacle. They have no expertise there (that I know
of) and are in no position to do volume sales. AMD has strategically
prefered to work with partners since they cannot just invest in
businesses; they have to conserve capital for other things.

You do know that AMD makes chipsets? But that's not the point. It has
nothing to do with investing away from there core competency. Try this
for a reason: THERE IS NO MONEY TO BE MADE IN MOTHERBOARDS (sub titled -
let the Chinese fight it out).

Either way, the answer to the question at hand should be obvious.

Yes it should and it's surprising to see you dance all around the issue.
