AMD cannot supply 30% of the CPU market; if they were going to fab
mobos, they'd have even less supply capabilities.
Please! WTF do motherboards have to do with fab capabilities? Do you
think Intel makes motherboards? (I guess you should know).
Motherboards require chipsets, chipsets require silicon. I am pretty
sure everyone who reads this NG knows that...and if they don't it's not
hard to infer. Perhaps as an exercise in education you should check
out the die size on some chipsets...
Intel has older fabs to produce chipsets. Where are AMD's older fabs?
Intel may produce motherboards for their own internal needs, but I'd be
relatively surprised. As you pointed out, playing with FR4 is a bit
different than silicon.
The answer is that AMD doesn't really need to be in the motherboard
market...Nvidia does a fine job. If there isn't much profit in the
market, why re-enter?
What?! I didn't know nVidia was in the motherboard biz! Wow, I must be
outta the loop.
Motherboard, chipset, the distinction isn't relevant here. AMD does
not enter the chipset market for the reasons I stated (served by
existing companies, requires more fab space and requires more design
resources).
AMD entering the motherboard business, using someone else's chipsets
would just be a spectacle. They have no expertise there (that I know
of) and are in no position to do volume sales. AMD has strategically
prefered to work with partners since they cannot just invest in
businesses; they have to conserve capital for other things.
Either way, the answer to the question at hand should be obvious.
