Re: Strategy NG dying as well

1) People now use Forums for their specific games.

Until they get censored by some nincompoop moderator. Then they come

Gamespot, Gamespy, IGN, and all major game sites have general and
specific game forums.
2) No moderators

Moderators suck. You can tell that simply by noting how few people
participate in moderated groups here on USENET. I might not mind a
programmatic moderating system based on peer/popular opinion, if
that would also eliminate all spam and nym-shifting. Having to obey
moderators/employees whose bottom-line interest is promoting the
game (or the hosted games) isn't my idea of fun. The lack of
commercial bias is perhaps the main critical difference between
USENET and a web-based forum.

and more spam

Google Groups has greatly increased the spam inflow here. Sooner or
later, hopefully that will be stopped. Except for spam and
nym-shifting, stuff Google Groups encourages, ordinary filtering
takes care of anything a moderator can take care of.

If you look at the game forums, they are huge. For example, go
over to Relic boards and see how many people are active for
Company of Heroes and Warhammer Dawn of War.

Warhammer is a huge group on my news server.

Or go over to agecommunity.com and see all the activity for Age of
Empires...same thing with Command and Conquer, Supreme
Commander...etc.

My news server has hundreds of gaming groups.

Start a new thread about some obscure PC strategy game and you'll
likely get replies from people who have actually played that game.

I guess the question is... if there were a web-based moderated forum
with the same function as this group, how many people would be
there?

Good luck and have fun.
