I bought a go set in 1975, but it sat unplayed for ten or fifteen years
until I bought The Many Faces of Go. In those intervening years I had
a book but couldn't make much sense of it. TMFoG enabled me to
actually learn how to play. For a game with such simple rules, I found
it amazingly hard to catch onto. I must've played at least ten or
twenty frustrating games before I finally began to get it. Even then,
though, I got ripped to shreds in an online game years ago. Never had
the patience to study beyond the most rudimentary aspects of the game.

Go ain't chess, it's still pretty fun even if you're not very good,
which you're not and like the rest of us, never will be. Don't bother
studying books once you learn how to play (though yes the Janice Kim
books are great to start with), follow the moves of games of great
players, you won't understand every move, but it's like tracing other
people's drawings, you slowly learn how to draw yourself.

Most important play and play and play and play. Unlike chess, the
handicap in Go is very effective for making an interesting game for
both players, it's just a question of putting your ego aside and asking
for or accepting stones. Plus, it's just so horribly addicting.
