Because less than 1 casual gamer in 20 has even heard of the 30 Years War,
less than 1 in 100 can tell you when it was and probably less than 1 in 1000
could tell you who the major players were.

A target audience of roughly 500 people isn't exactly what gets allocated the
multimillion dollar budget a good, big game gets these days (for the advertising
campaign if nothing else)

England was involved, they allied with the Dutch and the French (and later the
Swedes and Danes) to oppose the Habsburgs. England raised an army under
Mansfeldt to recover the Lower Palatinate. The Spanish besieged the Dutch at
Breda and the French and Dutch demanded the army go relieve them instead. The
French later revoked their permission for free passage through France and the
Dutch refused to let it land at Breda. After much desertion and starvation the
remnants eventually were allowed to land at Breda, but it was far too little and
far too late to do any good and Breda was taken.

It couldn't possibly be that it wasn't one war with a defined set of sides but
a series of relatively minor conflicts that raged all over Europe with an ever
changing series of players, some of which changed sides during the period, none
of which will make even the slightest bit of sense to the typical gamer without
an accompanying history lesson.
