The main killer on my old rig were load times. Abysmal (1 minute min to
load
a save game - bletch!). Have they got much better these new uber rigs? I'm
looking at a mid-range C2D with 4Gb DDR3 & a 1Gb 4870, so be nice to know.

Well, there are different speeds of C2D and you didn't say which you plan to
buy. I have the C2D E6850 which is a 3.0GHZ cpu OC to 3.4GHZ , 4GB ram and
4870 512mb and and the load times are far less than one minute. Using quick
save takes a bit longer than most games but it is not too long, maybe a five
second pause.
Cool, tx Juarez. I think the best price point & bang-4-buck here is a E8400
3GHz C2D (maybe a E8500), but I was looking at the 1Gb 4870, so that should
make it a bit better even I imagine, at least the texture loading parts. Who
knows why this game takes 10 times as long to load as most other similar
ones, other than it's badly programmed/optimised? I assume pre-loading
level/world detail graphics into memory takes a significant portion of the
save game load times, but I'm happy to sit corrected.
