{ot} no sound

I just upgraded my computer yesterday. I got an Asus P5GC-MX/1333
motherboard, and yes finally upgraded to XP, as the 8800 card I got
doesn't have any drivers for 2000.

CoV plays so much better now...

But I've got a wierd sound issue. The motherboard has a Realtek HD
audio built in. The drivers from asus appeared to install o.k. and I
have an orange sound icon which brings up a asus sound panel. I can
go in there an play a couple tests which play to my speakers o.k. The
problem is I can't get sound from anything else. If I go into the
sound and audio device properties it says there is no audio device.
There are no exclamation or question marks in my device manager. I
notice when I go into the Realtek High Definition Auido device it says
the manufacturer and date version etc are unknown.

I tried uninstalling it, but it says it can't unistall, the device may
be needed to start windows. I tried the update drivers button, but
nothing happens. I dl'd the latest driver from asus, but it had an
error trying to install. Rollback says there are no previous
drivers. I tried disabling it in the bios, and it went away, and I
was able to install the latest drivers, but that did nothing after
reenabling it. I also noticed all the other sound devices were still
there when I had it disabled.

I've tried looking around the net, found somthing that said to turn on
windows audio in services, but it was already and another which said
to make sure Plug and Play Software Enumerator was in the system
devices, and it was.

I'm almost ready to go buy a seperate audio card, but I'd rather get
the one on the mb working as it's obvious it's some sort of software
issue.
