I don't know if this critcism of MMORPGs is really all that fair.
Taking World of Warcraft for example, as a single player game it would as
much an RPG as any game. It's the multi-player aspects of MMORPGs that
take away from the "role playing". The immersion breaking experience
of some other player using leetspeak or even cringe inducing psuedo
"olde english". It's hard to take a quest to save the world seriously
when half the people you're playing with have already done it. But as
far the actual game goes, MMORPGs has have all the same elements that
make Morrowind and Baldur's Gate RPGs.
