I assume you've already tried kicking your 19" into 'large' DPI
resolution mode (screen, properties, settings, advanced, and fiddle with
it) .. you can fiddle with font sizes elsewhere too?

You bet. Unfortunately it looks like crap, and the definition gets blurrier
rather than better if I do that. I am running a program called 'eyerelief' that
scales desktop icons&text to 120% and that works much better at that setting
than changing resolution or going to Windows 'large icons and fonts' mode. And
this monitor (HP 1955) is lovely at native resolution, its built-in scaling
while not quite Horrible isn't all _that_ great either.
Very nifty little program, that 'eyerelief'. Freeware, yet, i.i.r.c.

From a meter away I don't think a .51" dot is going to look 'very
chunky', but then most folks don't have arms that long, and sit a good
bit closer. If you have vision problems, please go see your optician
pronto .. and then you'll need to 'try before you buy' on your next
display.

Yes well, I am going through a 'hole'. I can read fine with my reading glasses.
I see fine without them from about 1m to 15m. Outside that my prescription
glasses for being a mite short-sighted (0.5 diopters) work well. The range
between .4m and 1m is currently getting more problematic. <sigh> Optician
thought it was about par for my age.
I had my old 19" crt sitting at about a metre and 1024x768 and that worked
fine. Since I got the lcd, which has a native resolution of 1200x1024 I've had
to bring it closer and closer over the last couple of years. Now I can't bring
it any closer as it's hanging over the edge of the desk already (the adjustable
keyboard surface is in front and below it) ...
... going further away and dropping the reading glasses seems the most
attractive option right now.

Getting old stinks. :-P

He, he, only if you don't wear incontinence pants <EG> *duck*

Just a thought - if you get a monitor that's too large, next thing your neck
will start to hurt from whiplash! ;)
