I think this is true.  People have vastly different tolerances.
One idiot in a game can annoy me to no end, whereas
someone else will ignore it and say "who?" when I
mention the idiot an hour later.  If people treat the game
like a tactical simulation, then it's easy to overlook the
competitiveness, trash talking, abundant use of
net-speak and abbreviations, laughing at the novices,
etc.  But if you want an RPG, or an escape from reality,
it doesn't take too many bozos to really screw that up.

My friend has rejoined a guild that I considered all idiots.
But he is texting and IMing all day, and probably doesn't
mind the constant inane banter that drove me nuts.
(he thinks lolcatz is funny)


I'm with you there. The silliness, while it may even be funny the
first couple of times I hear it, can really get old. It's kind of like
when a little kid does some cute little trick that just gets the
grownups tickled and then proceeds to do it over and over expecting
the same reaction. The kid continues to do it until they stumble upon
some other way to impress, or some other sparkly object grabs their
attention.

Maybe I'm just a bit of a stick in the mud, but all the pop and
internet culture the permeates todays mmorpg's can be a real
distraction.
