I think this is true. People have vastly different tolerances.
One idiot in a game can annoy me to no end, whereas
someone else will ignore it and say "who?" when I
mention the idiot an hour later. If people treat the game
like a tactical simulation, then it's easy to overlook the
competitiveness, trash talking, abundant use of
net-speak and abbreviations, laughing at the novices,
etc. But if you want an RPG, or an escape from reality,
it doesn't take too many bozos to really screw that up.

My friend has rejoined a guild that I considered all idiots.
But he is texting and IMing all day, and probably doesn't
mind the constant inane banter that drove me nuts.
(he thinks lolcatz is funny)

I tried a couple of online games after WoW, then tried
LOTRO and the difference was almost instantly apparent.
The players just seemed that much more mature overall.
Sure, there were some players with the silly names,
and occasional "lf2m 4 gb; burg or min plz" junk, but
it seems much less prevalent. There are a lot more
group quests than WoW but I've never had problems
finding a group despite the lower population, and I've
never had a bad pick up group. The WoW immigrants
seem to split into the two groups, those that fall in
love with it quickly and those who just don't see anything
special.
