Seriously, there's no escapism into the main character for you when you
watch *any* movie? Why bother? Or are you saying you identify more with
pixelated cartoon characters than real-life, hi-def 3D humans?

Do you? That's interesting, am I the exception? When I watch a movie
I am doing just that, watch a movie. See a story unfold. I never
imagine I am the protagonist (I don't think I could even if I wanted,
I am watching some dude do stuff). Do people think they are the
protagonist when they watch movies? Definitely not me. Now, when I
play RPGs (specially MMORPGs) I do believe I am the character. I act
like him, react like him, talk like him (in-game), etc. That's why
1st person view is mandatory for me.

It's not cut and dried like that for all games, at least not for me. In
some games I am immersed in the story, but in others I'm a third party
pulling the strings. But my reasons for not using first-person view are
strictly practical, in that I don't find it immersive *enough*. I can't
look down and see my feet, or whip my head around and glance behind me. I
don't like the effect of having blinders on. Over-the-shoulder third
person view gives me a much better idea of what I might see through the
character's eyes, IMO. I get that that's not the majority viewpoint.

One of my favorite RPGs actually addresses this whole mess by breaking the
fourth wall and acknowledging that there's another presence in the story,
pulling the strings and manipulating the protagonist. It never got a PC
port, although one was planned at some point.

Games which acknowledge the 4th wall:
Monkey Island 2
Duck Amuck
....?
