Re: MMORPGs that require first-person view?

Use left-click-hold to pan around is by far the best solution for keyb/mouse
users I've seen to date. Most implementations snap-to back when you release
the LMB, which is fine, though I'd like an option not to.

Best? Define "best." I don't like panning systems because they are
disorienting. I much prefer a fixed degree glance to the side that will
be the same every time I tap the a key. In such systems, orientation
becomes second nature after a while. In flight sims, there are often
reference points such as canopy frames and the wings and tail of the
aircraft. In FP MMOs, there are no such reference points.

Sorry, I thought I was clear - I was talking more about 3rd-person view
mmorpgs. Though it does work for fp mmos, it's a bit counter-intuitive &
disorienting to have a camera swing around the centre of your head as the
pivot point, I agree. Not so from a distance.

might require keys to lean around corners, but I prefer slashers where
leaning is pointless. And as for immersion (or realism? <g>), what sort
of creature can swivel its head 360 degrees? I'd prefer simple
straightforward Look-Left Look-Right keys. YMMV

1st/3rd-person mmorpgs don't use leaning around corners - they're just not
that sort of game (plus they're most commonly designed for & played in
3rd-person view).

Most commonly? Um... ok. I've never spent much time playing a 3rd
person MMOG - with the exception of UO - but I spent *years* playing EQ,
EQ2, and DAoC. I only played WoW for a few days before giving up in
disgust - just not my cup of tea! None of the newer MMORPGs have
sparked my interest, so I can't comment on their view systems.

EQ2, CoX, LOTRO, WoW...all really designed for fp view really. You may like
to try Anarchy Online (hey, it's free & getting a complete facelift soon!)
which works better in fp view that most other mmos I find.

Unless you're talking mmofps games like TR or some others.
If you want a simulation, then mmos aren't the place to start looking for
it, which is after all what this topic is about ;-p

Nonetheless, I prefer the ease of use of a snap-look hot-key set-up.
(hmm, enough hyphens? <g>)

He, he, I've done at least 20 in a run-on sentence myself in the past :)
What you're asking for would be quite achievable with a good mouse (like my
MX1000), because you have 4 extra buttons all around the mouse wheel, so you
could pan left/right 45 degrees, a 2nd tap for 90 degrees maybe & same for
up/down - would this work?
