I was looking for updates and so forth for, "the Witcher" and
downloadacross
a
No-Cd and discovered at that site there was a "Torrent?"
WinAcefor
the
US
version that removes the US Censors crap.
Fine downloaded that and when I tried to open the fix with
FREE,or
RAR,
well you know the rest.
So then attempted to download a "Torrent?" program that was
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htmand
intogot
into a deal that said it could not talk to my machine. Won't go
THAT
as
I had gotten lost in the wily wogs.
Is there no other way to to get past this censorship bull***?
And NO I shall not pop for another new Non US Game.
Or would some one please explain "Torrent" to this old dummy?
Thanks

Well, a "Torrent" is really sort of pointer file to let you
download a much
bigger file (or set of files). It's the interface to a
peer-to-peer file sharing system that splinters the files into
smaller segments. So when you
use a torrent program to download a file, you are actually
grabbing chunks of the file from multiple users that are
"seeding" (translation: sharing) the file. A torrent file can
take a very long time to download, since you are at the mercy
of the upload speeds of the "seeds" out there, which is why
it splinters the file up into fragments - the theory is that if
you download
small fragments from a larger number of targets simultaneously,
the download
will finish faster. The theory usually works, as long as there
are enough "seeds" for you to grab.
I've had experience using µTorrent, it's a nice small (and free)
application
that is pretty easy to use. The website is
http://www.utorrent.com
Good luck!

Thanks CoinSpin,
I gave it a go but just can not get past my lousy router and
then I am asked to spend $ for some program that might fix my
LinkSys to work with the uTorrent. <sigh>
Guess no way to beat the Censors unless to spend even more $ and
I can't even get the No CD to work either.
drybones
Ah... You must be having issues with port forwarding. I forgot
about that little nugget, you have to set your router to allow a
connection on the port uTorrent wants to use. Otherwise, you
just get blocked.
However, check out that utorrent.com site... They have a web
interface they are working on, I believe it's in an early release
now... The idea is that will bypass the router port issues
(similar to how programs like gotomypc and other remote access
utilities do)
CoinSpin
Oops, may have spoken too soon... It looks like the web interface
is for monitoring your uTorrent program, not bypassing it
altogether... So the port forwarding issue will still be there.
What make/model of router do you have? Might be possible, I've
had to find workarounds on a lot of routers in the past, so I may
be able to give you some tips, if you are interested.
CoinSpin
Look up your router there, and with a bit of luck it will have a
walkthrough telling you how to set up ?torrent (It's listed under
Utorrent, because ? is not a standard ASCII character).
If your router is not listed (or it is listed but the Utorrent
entry is missing or unhelpful), let us know.

Thanks all for assist.
I have spent the past 90 plus minutes attempting to set up my
LinkSys Router model BEFW11S4 2.4GHZ 802.11b using the
instructions for WinXP SP2 with all updates from
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/routerindex.htm
I did, "I think", setup a UTorrent port successfully.
Then tried to download the TCWF.exe and got an ERROR: Access is
denied.
Looks like this old boy is up against a brick wall <sigh>
Must have the UTorrent setup wrong.
drybones
Well, one thing to double-check is that the port number being
forwarded is the same one that uTorrent is trying to use. They use
some weird 5 digit number port, and in my initial setup I actually
got a bit dyslexic and put the number in wrong... Took me a few
minutes to figure out what was going on.
Second thing to check: Make sure your firewall software is set to
something like "allow all" for uTorrent. Some spyware and firewall
software wants to block it immediately, thinking it's a villainous
program.
CoinSpin
What about enabling UNnP port mapping in µTorrent? Doesn't that configure
the ports for you? I'm sure that's what I did.
Checked and the UNnP port mapping does have a check mark.
The Port used for incoming connections shows a 43009 number.
Not sure if that is what the LinkSys is set for though.
Thanks,
drybones
