Sheldon,
Thanks for your perseverance :-)
I'm in Medicine Hat, and my news has been dead for the same, if not longer period. I just started getting it today.
I can't believe they didn't know about it !

Hi everybody!.
<gets on old man soap box>
Sigh. Mid-Monday my ISP's news server stopped propogating new messages.
Tuesday noon it was still was offline so I began a series of calls to
tech support.
After fifteen minutes in voice-activated hell I finally got a human who
claimed: "usenet ... never heard of it, you need to talk to a customer
billing agent, is this a web hosting inquiry?, perhaps your modem needs
to be re-set, what speed of connection do you have?" etc. No matter how
many times I explained that it had nothing to do with my end, the
(young) guy clearly had no clue what I was talking about.
I asked him to Google or Wikipedia 'usenet' and he sat there muttering
"hmmm ... uh ... hrmm ..." as he read about this strange and bizarre
phenomenon.
So I got redirected from Vancouver tech support to Edmonton customer
support to Calgary tech support, to more voice-activated hell, to
Toronto tech support, back to Edmonton tech support and once again back
to Calgary (this is almost two hours of bouncing around) where the first
person I spoke to said: "Oh, very sorry. We'll get our news server
restarted right away."
He apologized for the constant run around and reminded me that usenet is
a very technical area -- to which I replied, "yeah ... that's why I
called your *technical support* line."
As promised, the news server was working properly again not five minutes
later.
Geez. I guess any kid who has a facebook page and cell phone is
considered eligible for tech support work. I spoke with over ten
Internet technical support agents who had no idea what usenet was.
