4.5/5 GOTY.

Still, KOTOR was better.

Mass Effect = great movie with reasonable gameplay
KOTOR = great game with a great story

Here's hoping Mass Effect 2 is a marriage of the two.

Mass Effect is a lot like KotOR in style and theme and people who
liked KotOR (and not just because it was Star Wars) will probably like
Mass Effect, too. I love games like this so I am having a blast even
though it is on a console (I prefer my RPGs on my computer thank you).

I think the game system is a lot cleaner in Mass Effect. One problem
with KotOR was that sometimes the coarseness of the d20 system was too
evident. Another was the d20 system's weird handling of things like
ranged combat (exasperated by the whole light saber thing).

So far (~10 hours of play) the story seems quite good, easily on par
with KotOR. The characters are interesting and the gameplay is very
smooth.

Something I really don't like is the little minigame you play to open
locks. There was no instructions on what to do (either in the printed
"manual", useless as are most such manuals nowadays, nor in the on-
screen presentation) so I floundered around at first. Eventually I
caught on but I still don't like it.

And while I usually don't care much about the visuals they are, well,
WOW! The audio (voice, effects, even music) is good, too. Effects
and music are usually "meh" to me but bad voice acting really grates.
My wife came up while I was first playing and asked what SciFi movie I
was watching.

I agree with all your points (and I hate 'me too' posts). The game is basically KOTOR 3, but I really like the all voice acting (which is done quite well) and the minigames are stupid. Documentation sucks too, very sparse. It's a lot of fun, but no 10/10 for me, probably a 7.5/10 because it's basically just a third KOTOR with some enhancements. Don't get me wrong, i am thoroughly enjoying the game, but it's so similar to KOTOR that it doesn't feel like any kind of revolutionary game that would merit a 10/10 in my book. it even feels like they used the same engine with a few tweaks, which to me, does a disservice to the Unreal Engine. oh well.
