Compared to LOTRO, for example, it's:

- less pretty
- has less storyline
- no epic feel really (yet)
- far more cutesy, kidsie (bleh)
- far crappier quests (I'm yet to get anything but 'Kill X' or fedex quests)

Our kin was discussing WoW last night and someone mentioned that in WoW
everyone you encounter is actually a PC, that there are no automated
NPCs. Is this true? It's all the equivalent of LotRO's Monster Play? If
so, what's to stop uber characters from smashing newbies?

No, there are NPCs all over the place, from merchants to officials (like a village elder) to trainers etc everywhere. I had another short but fruitful grouping with some guy last night because we happened to be in the same nasty place/quest at the same time which wasn't easy to solo for our levels (12th). Must be us Aussies on Oceanic servers who are just so non-asshat that makes it bearable :)

To answer the 2nd part of your question, if you're on a PvP server the only safe place is cities/towns & certain safe zones, but they're few & far between from what I've been told. Everyone is fair game & quite often you get raiding hordes of dozens of players doing a fly-by through low-level territory & ganking everyone. Not really my cuppa.

I so wanted to hate it, & all I can say is now after 4 or 5 days, I neither love it nor hate it, I can see it for what it is & am enjoying it in spite of all its flaws, probably just the novelty which I fully expect to wear off with a loud thud in a few days.

Thanks for the feedback. Out of curiosity, did you play many characters
in short bursts each or did you focus on a primary character? It's the
four factions from Warcraft 3, isn't it? Humans, Horde, Elves, Undead?

It's Alliance (dwarf, gnome, human, night elf) vs Horde (Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead) & 9 classes with one unique class each side (Paladin, Shaman). I went straight for one of the pet classes (as I do :), an Undead Warlock.

Look, if you can get a 10-day trial & have some time, try it out. The engine & system reqs are far more forgiving than LOTRO (or most other recent mmos out there). It's nothing new now as it was nothing new 3-4 yrs ago, but hey, it's Blizzard & there's no end to fanbois out there, as 7+ million regular sheep can attest to, so who am I to argue with the need for eugenics? <G> Seriously, it will come down to the ppl you group with and/or how much you like to solo. So far, it's fine either way, but keep in mind I'm not on PvP or US servers, so make of that what you will. ;) I'll probably try a 2nd char (maybe a Rogue, Druid or Shaman), just to see how that plays out (probably pinch another one of my mate's free trial slots :), but I could never live down subbing to it, so I'll resist at all costs & keep my dignity intact :) Anyway, I just saw online that you have to put in a retail key which means full price - fuggadit! 4 days to go on this account then :)
I've still got GW:NF, AO, 2Ws & The Witcher to play/complete for free, so I'd have to be mad to pay for WoW :) I do hear very good things about Tabula Rasa, & it sounds like my kinda game...must...resist...arggghhh!!@#!@#$!@#$!@#
