Or you can buy an LCD like the HPW002 [correction: HP w2207] that have 1:1 scaling done via hardware on the monitor and not through the video card. (rest snipped)

Are better results obtained if the 1:1 scaling is done using the
monitor rather than the video card?
If I ensured that a newly bought video card supported 1:1 scaling,
would any widescreen monitor run all old games?

Thanks, regards, Robert.

I've never compared because I always use the analog connection and need to use DVI for that option on my Nvidia card. I have seen having the monitor do it is better but I don't know why. Maybe just more convenient to press a knob on your monitor than having to change your display properties. I did have a 27" Viewsonic HDTV that had the 1:1 option and it worked well but now I use a Samsung 226bw 22" widescreen and it doesn't have that otpion. I would have got the HP but the Samsung was $100.00 less and has faster response time. My Samsung is 2ms and the HP is 5ms. If you are looking for a good gaming LCD then the Samsung 226bw is the probably best deal out there right now. But you would have to use the Nvidia card to get 1:1 for older 4:3 games.
